Stamped Concrete vs. Pavers vs. Natural Stone vs. Plain Concrete

Short answer: plain concrete is the least expensive option and the fastest to install; pavers are the easiest to repair since individual units can be swapped; natural stone is the most expensive and longest-lasting when properly installed; stamped concrete sits in the middle, giving a stone or paver look at a lower cost and with faster installation than either.

What’s the cost difference between stamped concrete, pavers, natural stone, and plain concrete?

Nationally, plain concrete typically runs the least per square foot installed, stamped concrete costs somewhat more due to the decorative finishing work, pavers cost more again because of the labor to lay individual units, and natural stone is generally the most expensive because of material and installation labor cost. These are general industry ranges, not a quote — actual cost depends on the size of the project, site prep needed, and the specific pattern or stone chosen.

Material Relative Cost Typical Lifespan Maintenance Install Time
Plain Concrete $ 25-30+ years Low — occasional sealing 1-3 days
Stamped Concrete $$ 25+ years Low — reseal every 2-3 years 2-4 days
Pavers $$$ 25-50 years Medium — joint sand, occasional releveling 3-7 days
Natural Stone $$$$ 50+ years Medium — periodic sealing, joint care 5-10+ days

Which option lasts the longest?

Natural stone typically lasts the longest of the four when properly installed and maintained, often 50 years or more, because the material itself doesn’t degrade the way a poured or manufactured surface can. Plain and stamped concrete both commonly last 25 years or more before major cracking or resurfacing is needed, and pavers can last just as long or longer since individual damaged units can be replaced without redoing the whole surface.

Which requires the least maintenance?

Plain and stamped concrete generally require the least ongoing maintenance of the four, needing only occasional cleaning and resealing every few years. Pavers and natural stone both involve more upkeep over time — pavers need joint sand replenished and can shift or settle in spots, while natural stone joints need periodic attention and the stone itself may need resealing depending on the type.

How long does each option take to install?

Plain concrete is generally the fastest to install, often complete in a few days for a typical residential driveway or patio. Stamped concrete takes a bit longer because of the stamping and coloring process. Pavers and natural stone take the longest because each unit or stone is placed individually, which adds labor time proportional to the size of the area.

Which option looks the most like natural stone or brick?

Natural stone is, by definition, the real material, so nothing matches it exactly. Stamped concrete and pavers can both be finished in patterns and colors designed to resemble cut stone, slate, or brick, and at typical viewing distance the difference is often subtle. Pavers have visible joint lines between units, while stamped concrete has a continuous surface with scored or stamped lines mimicking joints, which some homeowners prefer for a more seamless look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is stamped concrete cheaper than pavers?

Generally yes. Stamped concrete typically costs less than pavers for a comparable stone or brick look, mainly because it installs faster and uses less labor per square foot.

Can stamped concrete crack like plain concrete?

Yes, stamped concrete can crack under the same conditions that crack plain concrete, such as poor sub-base preparation or ground movement, though proper control joints and installation greatly reduce the risk.

Do pavers need to be resealed like stamped concrete?

Pavers can be sealed to protect their color and reduce weed growth in the joints, but it’s optional rather than required the way resealing is recommended for stamped concrete’s decorative finish.

Which option adds the most resale value?

Natural stone and well-installed pavers are often perceived as the highest-end options and can add strong curb appeal, but stamped concrete offers a similar upgraded look at a lower cost, which can be a better return on investment for many homeowners.

I called several concrete contractors to get estimates on laying a 41x 24 slab for a Building being installed soon on the property. New Creation confirmed a few required details and came back with reasonable, fair quotes and considerably close to if not lower than a few of the estimates I was gathering. Marvin was polite, friendly and professional and speedily completed said work within the next 24 to 72 hours which included 2 last minute truck loads of dirt that were much needed. I was more than impressed with the crews availability, the team coordination, quality labor and have to say the record rate of completion was a pleasant surprise. I highly recommend New Creation's team and will be spreading the word and encouraging others to take advantage of his work in the very near future. Thanks Rebecca

They had just finished pouring my patio when we got an unexpected rain shower. The owner and his crew came back immediately after the rain stopped and refloated and restamped the concrete. I didnt even have to call and ask they just turned around and fixed it. The work quality is excellent the crew is professional and prompt. I would give 6 stars if I could.

Had a patio done via New Concrete Creations. Overall The price for the patio was great considering quality of the concrete. No skimping on rebar in this patio. The first day was framing and preparation the second day was pouring the foundation. Ray and team helped me move the spa... an move all my stuff to complete the pour. Everything worked out great. The splatter of concrete was minimal, still need to clean up a little bit of minor splatters using some acid. Overall patio is a great addition. Makes such a difference for the house to be able to go outside without getting muddy feet. It's clear to me that Ray has a lot of experience with concrete and this is why I hired him. It's important that the contractor uses the right amount of rebar and the concrete is the right mix for the job. In my case we used 4,000 PSI concrete with additives to minimize cracking. The framing was done well.
